How A Finer Touch Construction Incorporates Having a Positive Attitude into the Building Process

With the combined experience of the every department at A Finer Touch Construction, our team has been able to determine our 11 core values that guide us toward success in custom luxury home building across the valley. Custom construction is hard work and it is not for the faint of heart. This isn’t just limited to the physical labor, which we’re endlessly thankful for, especially considering the conditions our subcontractors face throughout the year in Arizona. But during the preconstruction phase, dialing in the details between the architects, designers, and subcontractors can be mentally taxing. This is what brings us to our core value of “having a positive attitude.” Having a positive attitude at AFT means understanding circumstances, setting realistic goals, and being ready to collaborate to solve problems.

Having a positive attitude is not just about maintaining positivity above all of your given circumstances. What’s core to having a positive attitude is fully understanding the existing conditions and what ability you have to control them. Establishing what we have control over can wash away a layer of anxiety by accepting what circumstances we know we cannot control. To get a bit less abstract, it’s very relieving to rely on established, authorized decisions. For example, it is a huge relief when architects provide thorough insulation details and specs, rather than the decision being between the general contractor, subcontractors, and client. Since the architect has finalized their decision, there is no worry about having any clarifying discussions between the client and the subcontractors. Just a simple relief from the scope of decision-making throughout the construction process can uphold a positive attitude.

Each and every stage of the custom home building process requires daily goal setting, which can greatly maintain a positive attitude in the workplace. Building off the previous topic, goal setting is only possible after getting a realistic assessment of the given circumstances. Once we’ve reviewed the circumstances, we can begin brainstorming feasible daily goals. The key to realistic goal setting is to not overestimate your abilities and put the cart before the horse. While it is always helpful to plan ahead and work to refine details for the future, custom construction is incredibly volatile and can go in any direction any day. Careful management of realistic goals can help workers manage their time, relieve their anxiety, and maintain a positive attitude.

The hurricane of details that we manage alongside the architect, designer, and subcontractors always require collaborative solutions. Prioritizing collaboration on solutions rather than playing the blame game enables our teams to stay positive and productive. An important outlook to adopt in this case is acknowledging that everyone we work with is only human, and expectations are not absolute perfection. Same as we set feasible goals for ourselves, we acknowledge the circumstances affecting each party and come up with a collaborative solution. If a subcontractor is having a problem with a vendor, we know not to blame a subcontractor, but to let it wash off and understand that no problems are planned. It is profoundly important to maintain a positive attitude, since very little can be done when we wallow in blame and hatred. When issues cannot be solved by an individual and you need help, it should be common sense to maintain mutual respect and courtesy with the person you’re finding solutions with. We are always endlessly thankful for the subcontractors that put in the work to make sure all the work is performed to the highest quality.

Work in custom luxury homes can take a lot out of someone if they aren’t operating with a healthy mindset. It should be abundantly clear what circumstances you’re presented with and what you can do to change them. Once the existing conditions are clear, it’s easier for you to set achievable and realistic goals for yourself, without disappointing or exhausting yourself. When the issues inevitably arise, before stressing or blaming yourself or others, you should reexamine the cause of these issues and direct yourself toward a solution that keeps everyone happy. Having a positive attitude at A Finer Touch Construction is a breeze so long as these guidelines are followed and team collaboration never ceases.
